Frida Kahlo Artifacts Uncovered
Renovation of
artist’s home
reveals treasures
(AP) - A two-year renovation
project at the home-tumed-mu-
seum o f legendary M exican
painter Frida Kahlo has uncov
ered a vast wardrobe of previ
ously undiscovered clothing and
other valuable artifacts.
Commonly known as the Blue
House because of its indigo ex
ternal paint job, Kahlo and her
husband, famed muralist Diego
Rivera, lived in the home in the
M exican capital’s fashionable
Coyoacan neighborhood until her
death in 1954.
Rivera turned it into a museum
four years after his wife’s death,
but it w asn’t until work to re
store private areas began last
summer that officials found the
180 articles of clothing - which
included traditional M exican
dresses depicted in Kahlo’s fa
mous self-portraits, as well as
shoes, shawls and pre-Hispanic
jewelry that belonged to her.
Also discovered were photo
graphs taken by Kahlo’s father,
Wilhelm, a Hungarian photogra
pher. There is also a pair of
earrings believed to be a gift from
Picasso.
“We were all surprised by the
dimensions of this treasure,” said
Ignacio Custodia, an administra
tor of the Kahlo museum. The
artifacts were found when work
ers “opened spaces that were
closed for many years,” he said.
Many of the dresses recently
discovered are from the south
ern Mexican state of Oaxaca,
where seamstresses often tailor
fashions according to centuries-
old Indian tradition. Kahlo was
especially inspired by artistic tra
ditions of Oaxaca’s Tehuantepec,
where women continue to hand-
embroider traditional dresses ac
cording to Zapotec Indian tradi
tions, said HildaTrujillo, the Blue
House’s coordinator.
The painter looked up to the
women o f Tehuantepec, who
often served as the head o f their
households, follow ing strong
m atriarchal traditions, Trujillo
said.
During her life, Kahlo be
cam e a m ythic figure in M exico
- famous for her m arriage to
Rivera as well as her com m u
nist ideals and her celebration
o f native M exican dress and
jew elry. A fter her death, her
fame grew in this country and
around the world.
The Blue House is now one
o f M exico’s m ost-visited mu
seums. Rivera ordered any arti
facts recovered in the house to
rem ain there - m aking it the
only place the newly discov
ered clothing will be on display.
Museum officials expect a spe
cial exhibition featuring the finds
to be ready in about a year.
“T his should attract m ore
people to the museum,” Trujillo
said. “The articles are a very
important part o f her artistic life
and personality.”
