Biopic ‘Ray’ Wins Four NAACP Awards

ming the truck into a police car,
survived when Portland police shot
at the m oving vehicle M onday
night. The suspect suffered a su ­
perficial w ound to the head.
T w o officers w ere trying to stop
the truck near the intersection o f SE
Boise Street and SE 113th A venue
w hen they said the incident hap­
pened ju st before 11 p.m.
It is thought by the Portland
Police Bureau that the head w ound
may have been caused w hen the
suspect hit the w indshield and not
from a bullet.
As o f 7:30 a.m ., no arrests had
been m ade and the suspect was
being treated at O regon Health and
Science U niversity.
Both o ffic ers in v o lv ed have
worked in the southeast Portland
precinct for the past four years.
(AP) - The biopic "Ray” about the life of
legendary singer Ray Charles won four NAACP
Image Awards, including an outstanding-actor
trophy that added to its star Jamie Foxx’s armful
o f honors.
"Ray” was nominated for a leading seven
awards, including outstanding motion picture
and 1 nit standi ng actor in a motion picture for Foxx,
who received the best-actor Oscar at last month's
Academy Awards.
Foxx exchanged longembraces Saturday night
with presenters Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll
as he accepted his NAACP trophy.
The 36th annual Image Awards, which honor
films, television, literature and music by and
about people of color, were handed out at the
Don ithy Chandler Pavilion. Theceremony, hosted
by actorChrisTucker, was scheduled to air Friday
on Fox.
"This has been an absolute wonderful ride,”
said Foxx, who also won a Golden Globe and
Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of
the music legend.
11 was the second year i n a row that Ray Charles
loomed large at the Image Awards, which honor
works by and about people o f color. He was
inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame in 2004,
three months before his death at 73.
Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys also was a
multiple winner, taking home a pair o f trophies
for outstanding song and music video for "If I
A in’t Got You."
W inners were chosen by members o f the
National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, the nation’s oldest and largest
ci vi I rights organization. Other honors for "Ray ”
included: Kerry W ashington, outstanding ac­
tress in a motion picture, and Regina King,
outstanding supporting actress in a motion
picture.
In her acceptance speech, W ashington said
the country needs the N A A C P’s activism more
than ever.

T he victim was on the grounds
o f V estal School.
He w as conscious, talked with
officers and was transported to the
hospital.
Police have not yet released any
inform ation about suspects.

Speaking at a cerem ony that, unlike most
other awards shows, eagerly blends politics
and entertainment, she warned that the rights
of people o f color, w omen and the poor are “in
danger o f being stripped” away.
Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman
won the Image Award for supporting actor in
his role in the film “Million Dollar Baby.”
Freeman and Foxx made Oscar history earlier
this year. For only the second tim e in the
cerem ony’s 77 years, blacks earned two o f the
four acting awards. Denzel Washington and
Halle Berry won in 2002.
Kanye West was named outstanding new
artist for his album, “College Dropout,” while
G ram m y-w inner Usher was honored as out­
standing male artist. “A merican Idol" winner
Fantasia was named outstanding female art­
ist.
West was humble in his acceptance speech.
“ I made some mistakes and 1 learned from
those mistakes,” he told the audience, charac­
terizing the past year as “a trip.”
In the new category o f outstanding inde­
pendent or foreign film, the aw ard went to
Bishop T.D . Jak es’ dram a about abuse,
“W om an Thou Art Loosed.” Jakes’ novel,
from which the movie was adapted, also was
nam ed best literary work, fiction.
U.S. Sen. Barack Obam a, D-I1L, received
the Chairm an’s Award, while the Vanguard
Award went to pop star Prince. Talk show
host and entrepreneur Oprah W infrey also
was inducted into the N A A C P Hall o f Fame.
