in Jefferson
Volunteers rebuild
a field of dreams
H elp is pouring in to rebuild a field o f
dream s on the Jefferson High School cam ­
pus in north Portland.
D ozens o f com m unity residents, includ­
ing police officers, coaches, players and
neighborhood representatives are renovat­
ing the high sch o o l’s baseball field after
years o f neglect.
T he Portland Police A ssociation becam e
interested w hen they learned that Jefferson
h asn ’t fielded a team for three years.
A frican A m erican police officer Daryl
T urner and other m em bers o f the associa­
tion w ent to their union board and won a
$2,5000 donation that is being used to pay
for som e o f the renovations.
M em bers o f the non-profit Youth
G ang O utreach team and H um boldt
N eighborhood A ssociation have also
added a donation o f sw eat-equity by
w orking on the project. A local busi­
ness has offered to donate bats needed
for the team to practice. T he school is
also seeking the donation o f ad d i­
tional baseball equipm ent and a riding
law nm ow er to m aintain the field.
T he goal is to have a w orking base­
ball field by April 6 ahead o f Jefferson’s
opening gam e on A pril 19.
