Jesuit Basks in State Championship
Tarver brothers named
to all-tourney team
(AP) — Top-ranked Jesuit rallied back from a
17-point deficit to beat Lake Oswego 57-53 Sat
urday night in the championship game of the
OSAA Class 4A boys basketball tournament at
McArthur Court in Eugene.
With 49 seconds left in the game, Jesuit’s
Steve Jones missed on a jum p shot, the rebound
was tipped by Tarver to Grodahl who laid it up
and in to give the Cnisaders a 54-53 advantage
- their first lead of the game.
Grodahl then hustled down to the other end
and blocked a lay up by Bill Slade with 29
seconds left, giving the ball back to Jesuit.
Josh Tarver made three free throws in the final

More women
suffer addictions
A new 30-second ad designed
to persuade women with gambling
problems to seek free treatment
will begin airing this week on tele
vision stations across the state.
The ad, paid for by the Oregon
Lottery, was prompted by new
data showing that fewer women
than expected are seeking help for
gambling addictions.
In Oregon, women with gam
bling problems outnumber men,
according to Jeffrey M arotta,
problem gambling services man
ager in the Oregon Department of
Human Service.
He said of an estimated 2.3 per
cent of Oregon adults who are
problem gamblers, about 32,000
are women and 29,000 are men.
Marotta said a key to under
standing the greater share of fe
male problem gamblers is ready
access to video poker and slots.
“Eighty-nine percent of women
in tre a tm e n t re p o rte d b ein g
hooked to electronic m achine
g a m e s," M a ro tta said , “ and
women were significantly more
likely than men to report slot ma
chines as their game of choice.”
There are also environmental
factors.
Free and confidential treatment
is paid for by the Oregon Lottery.
Marotta said about 4,000 people a
year call the toll-free problem gam
bling helpline (1 877 2-STOP-
NOW), where certified gambling
counselors provide information
and assist callers with choosing a
resource to help them quit or re
duce their gambling.

probable victory.
Kevin Love recorded 24 points and 23
rebounds for the Lakers (21-7), who led 29-12
at halftime but had 17 turnovers in the second
half and struggled to fend off Jesuit’s pres
sure defense.
Tarver and his brother, Seth, were named
to the first all-tournament team, the first broth
ers to make the team together since 1926. The
Tarvers are from northeast Portland’s Trinity
Lutheran School where three Tarver brothers
played on championship teams in grade
school.
Portland Interscholastic League players
named to the all-tourney teams, were Benson
senior Jeremy Lathan, a first team selection;
and Jefferson senior Mac Hopson and
JeffersonjuniorLathen Wallace, second team
selections.
