Proposed School Closures Hit Home
Impact greatest
in north and
northeast
A m assive plan to shift school
assignm ents and close six Portland
Public S chools has its greatest im
pact in north and northeast Port
land.
T h e p ro p o s e d c h a n g e s a n
nounced at a school board meeting
M onday night w ould require about
3,(XX) students overall to be moved
to different schools throughout the
city.
Superintendent Vicki Phillips’s
plan w o u ld ld u d e ex p an d in g
Jefferso n High, co nverting tw o
schools into m agnet program s and
changing attendance boundaries
at four schools. Phillips’ basis for
the proposal is declining en ro ll
ment, an unsteady budget and the
need to raise achievem ent.
This w ould be the m ost dram atic
shak eu p o f local schools since 1981,
w hen three high schools and four
elem entary schools w ere closed.
Three public meetings in the next
three w eeks are expected to bring
n eighborhood opposition to the
plan.

bom b w as dropped.
On Thursday, Feb. 24, the MHCC
Forensics team students will cel-
ebrate the heroic women who played
a vital role in the afterm ath o f the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Derry Jackson was sentenced to
tw o years probation on M onday
for violating a retraining order and
co n tactin g his estran g ed w ife,
Bernel Jackson, via telephone.
Jackson will have to attend an
anger m anagem ent class and re
pay the state $120 in co u rt-ap
pointed attorney fees. It w as noted
that Jackson had not paid child
support since S eptem ber o f 2003,
so he was not asked to pay any
fines by his w ife 's attorney.
Jackson does not plan to resign
from the school board and has not
yet decided w hether he will run for
re-election when his term expires
in June.

an O regon man reached out to more
than tw o dozen em otionally fragile
w om en, but prosecutors say he
w asn ’t looking for dates. Instead,
he allegedly tried to persuade them
to end their lives.
Gerald Krein, 26, is charged with
solicitation to com m it m urder for
o rg a n iz in g a m ass su ic id e on
V alentine’s Day, possibly while the
fem ale participants were all logged
online at the sam e tim e, said K la
m ath County S heriff Tim Evinger.
“The com m on theme is that these
were w om en w ho w ere vulnerable,
who were depressed," said Evinger.
“He invited them to engage in cer
tain sexual acts with him - and then
they were to hang them selves na
ked from a beam in his house.”
County Prosecutor Ed C aleb said
no one know s for sure w hether
Krein intended to bring participants
to his hom e or conduct the suicide
o ver the Internet. Because Krein
was living in a m obile hom e w hile
organizing the suicide, the idea o f
hanging bodies from beam s may
indicate the idea w as a fantasy.
No deaths had been found that
w ere linked to K rein, the sheriff
said. H ow ever, he said he would
