Mississippi Justice Waits 40 Years

member Edgar Ray Killen pleaded
“not guilty" three times Friday as
he was arraigned on murder charges
in the slayings o f three civil rights
workers more than 40 years ago.
Killen, 79, was arrested T hurs­
day in the 1964 shooting deaths
James Chaney, a 21 -year-old black
M ississippian, and two white New
Y orkers, Andrew Goodman, 20. and
Michael Schwemer, 24. It was the
first time the state has sought crim i­
nal charges in the case that out­
raged a nation.
Rep. John Lewis, the black Geor­
gia congressman who knew the
three slain men, hailed the arrest
Friday, telling N BC’s "Today” that
it was "a tremendous step down a
very long road.”
In 1967, the Justice Department
tried Killen and I8otherm en-m any
of them also Kian members - on
federal civil rights violations. Seven

beaten and shot to death.
They were participating in Free­
dom Summer 1964. when hundreds
o f young, mostly white, college
students came to the South to reg­
ister blacks to vote and start educa­
tional programs.
Several weeks later, their bodies
were found buried in a dam a few
miles from the church. The case
was dram atized in the 1988 movie
“M ississippi Burning.”
Killen has always denied a role in
the slayings.
M ississippi has had some suc­
cess reopening old civil rights m ur­
der cases, including a 1994 convic­
tion o f Byron de la Beckwith for the
1963 assassination o f N AACP field
secretary M edgar Evers.
