His biggest challenge during
the holiday season is keeping his

“What I’m trying to do now is
re-instill custom er loyalty so
people know where I am,” he
said.

(AP) - The black coaching profession took a
major hit last week when Notre Dame fired head
coach Tyrone Willingham.
Only two black head coaches remain in place for
next season in Division I-A football: Karl Dorrell at
UCLA and Sylvester Croom at Mississippi State.
At Division I-AA, when historically black insti
tutions such as Grambling are excluded, there are
no black head coaches.
In 1998, it appeared some progress was being
made when the number o f I-A black coaches
reached a record number of eight.
This season, there were five.
