Singles Party ‘Off the Hook’
Another evening
planned Dec. 17
A spark was ignited that has yet
todie. Portland’s first black singles
party was off the hook as men and
women in the mid- 20s on up gath
ered for an exciting and unpredict
able evening.
The gentlemen were well-suited
with ties, belts and matching shoes.
The women were dressed with the
sweetness of honey: pretty, dainty
and feminine.
Participants arrived, checked in
and scoped the atmosphere for that
perfect date. Special activities in
cluded speed dating, a series of
mini-dates whereby all personal
information was withheld includ
ing real names.
Each participant kept a scorecard
to rate his or her date a "hit,” "miss”
or "friend." The results were turned
in and favorables were lateremailed
back to the participants with per
mission to contact their dates. The
participants took it from there.
One flaw of this particular event
was that the women outnumbered
the men. But the ladies took the
disparity in stride. One man de
scribed the ratio as “absolutely
lovely.”
Later, a lock-n-key party gave
each male a key and each woman a
lock. The assigned task was to find
the matching the matching lock or
key and win a dance. Something
more risque' was originally planned
but changed at the last minute.
Organizers promise a not-so-inno-
cent variation o f the gam e for
Valentine’s Day 2005.
Finally, the night ended with a
raffle date o f some of Portland’s
finest black men and black women.
Lucky winners were taken to a side
room for 15 minutes o f conversa
tion, food and drinks. If there was a
spark, the prize was adinnercertifi
cate at a local restaurant. And rest
assured, there was a spark, at least
for one couple.
Overall, participants had an ex
tremely "good time."
PDX Black Singles events re
quire pre-registration. The next
singles event titled "Play in'G am es”
will be held Monday, Dec. 17 at 8
