If y o u ’re controlling
your carbs, you’ll want to
adopt new strategies at the
supermarket as well as in
the kitchen. The following
tips can help you stream
line the process and en
sure that you fill your shop
ping cart with all the right
foods:
Do the majority o f your
shopping along the perim
eter o f the store - that’s
where you' II find the most
n u tritio u s, low est carb
foods. Be careful when
selecting prepared salads
from the deli counter - even
those you might think are
acceptable, such as tuna,
egg and cucum ber salads,
can contain added sugar.
Avoid salads with pasta,
potatoes and grains.
Milk is high in carbs and
is not acceptable during
the initial phases o f the
Atkins low carb diet. In
stead, keep an eye out for
a new category o f con-
trolled-carb dairy drinks
that taste like milk. Low-
c a rb
y o g u rts
and
smoothies are also avail
able in the dairy section.
Be careful with condi
ments. Almost all brands
o f k e tc h u p , b a rb e c u e
sauce, teriyaki sauce, mari
nades, and sweet and sour
sauce contain added sug
ars. Look for low-carb ver
sions, or stick with natu
rally low-carb items like
oils, vinegar and mustard.
