for suffering families camped in
makeshift shelters in conflict-
ridden Sudan.
The medical workers are in
the West Darfur region w here
nearly 1.5 million people struggle
to survive in temporary housing.
The camps have little food, no
medicines and scarce water
supplies.
Another team of volunteers
from the local relief agency just
returned from a four-week as
signment.
"The last 18 months have
been horrific for the people of
Sudan,” says Bas Vanderzalm,
president of Northwest Medi
cal Teams. "The ongoing vio
lence and fear have caused hun
dreds of thousands of families
to be uprooted, losing crops, live
stock and their very livelihoods.
Our volunteers will bring medi
cal care and hope to people who
are traumatized physically and
emotionally.”

Let's Talk Trash
O r e g o n ia n s care about the environment and
conserving resources. But do our recycling practices
go far enough to protect the environment now and
in the future? Do garbage and recycling services
meet your needs? Should the region reach beyond
recycling goals to broader sustainability goals?
What do you think?
