Learning from World Class Choreographers

support to an inaugural N orthw est
Professional D ance Project, July 26
to Aug. 13, for students o f classical
dance.
The event will bring together an
esteem ed collection o f w orld-class,
contem porary dance m akers from
across North A m erica including
A lonzo King, D onald Byrd, G érard
Théorét, Shawn Hounsell and Davis
Robertson, as well as P ortland’s
own dance com m unity artists Sa
rah Slipper, M ary O slund and Minh
Tran, and representatives from O r
egon Ballet Theatre and Body Vox.
The project is an exclusi ve, three-
w eek sum m er dance offering for
young professionals and advanced
dance students ages 16 to 25, giv
ing them the opportunity to study
and w ork with leading dance m ak
ers and com panies on innovative
choreography.
The culm ination o f the project
will include a public show ing o f the
w orks-in-progress at Lincoln Hall
on the Portland State U niversity
cam pus Aug. 13. Follow ing the
perform ance, there will be a discus
sion period w ith artists, dancers
and audience.
E nrollm ent in the project is lim
ited to em phasize individualized
in s tr u c tio n ,
c o a c h in g
and
m entoring. A d m ittan ce w ill be
based on application m aterials, rec
om m endation by a director o r fac
ulty m em ber and/or audition.
