and more financial aid admin­
istrators to help fund the edu­
cations of m inority students.
The college is currently ap­
plying for a three-year nurs­
ing workforce diversity grant
to staff these positions.
According to King, one of
the boons o f her profession
is its versatility.
Nurses can be found in hos­
pitals, schools, private prac­
tices, in home health care, and
they are attorneys, researchers
and educators.
“Anywhere there is any kind
of health care given, nurses are
there,” said King.
Many organizations, includ­
ing the Oregon Center for Nurs­
ing, Oregon Health and Sciences
University and Linwood College
are trying to appeal to the minor­
ity population with a directed
campaign and public and private
grants for nursing school.
“I can ’t think another pro-
fession that allow s you to
have contact with other people
in the most im portant m ile­
stones in life: the birth of a
child, activities to keep them
healthy, through m inor or se­
rious illness, and at the end of
life,” said King.
For their 100,h anniversary,
the Oregon Nurses Association
celebrated with a gala and auc­
tion benefiting a nursing schol­
arship at the Lloyd C enter
D o u b letree, w ith keynote
speaker Elizabeth Norman, au­
thor of “We Band of Angels,”
last Thursday.
