(A P) — Sidelined by knee sur­
gery, Serena W illiam s spent m ost
o f the past eight m onths designing
dresses and dabbling in acting.
Now that she’s ready to get back
on a tennis court, it’s as if she never
left: W illiams will be seeded No. 1 at
the Nasdaq- lOOOpen, which begins
W ednesday in Key Biscayne, Fla.
“ I really, really am excited about
getting back,” said W illiams, the
tw o-tim e defending cham pion at
Key Biscayne. " I ’ve been in a lot o f
pain watching a lot o f players play
when I really w ant to be out there.”
The tournam ent will be her first
since she won her sixth G rand Slam
title by beating older sister Venus
at W im bledon in July.
D espite the long layoff, W ill­
iam s returns as the favorite - thanks
to a series o f w ithdraw als. The four
top-ranked w omen are m issing, in­
cluding Justine H enin-H ardenne
and Kim Clijsters.

“T hat’s been my battle, fighting
with the doctors,” she said.

French O pen sem ifinals. She said
she spent her tim e o ff focusing on
other pursuits, but w as back to
practicing by November.
“I enjoy doing a lot o f stuff like
acting and fashion, but my true
love has always been tennis,” she
said. “So I’ve ju st been desperate
to get back to the court.”
