Family Photo Dates to About 1915
In celebration of Black History Month, northeast Portland resident
Troy Kyles shares an old family photograph taken from the Illinois
Central Railroad Yard in Sallis, Miss, around 1915. Kyles' uncle
Jimmy is the second man from the left in the back row. His cousin
Richard Harmon is pictured holding a ticket to Chicago (far right, back
row). His uncle Murphy Kyles is seated in the chair holding a gold
watch and chain. Another cousin, IV. T. Brown (bottom row, second

project. “ It will be a liv

speaks to future gen

It will be a living
memorial, one that
speaks to future
generations about
peace, justice,

justice, hope and love.”
The landscaped m em orial would cover a four-acre triangle on the
shore o f W ashington’s Tidal Basin, between the Lincoln and Jefferson
M em orials and next to the Franklin D. Roosevelt M em orial. It would
include an elevated w alkw ay overlooking the basin, a huge stone
m arker in K ing’s likeness and num erousoak, pine, magnolia andcherry
trees.
The architects said their ideal design rem ains alm ost identical to the
original, although th e y 're considering changes to add extra security
and traffic control should they be required.
