admit black nurses "without regard to
numbers.” The generally accepted prac
tice of only hiring black nurses at 10
percent began to fade away but they still
worked in segregated units.
In England, the nurses were not
allowed to tend to white soldiers. In
fact, they were sent to a hospital full
of German prisoners of war. Only after
they proved them selves highly com-

American soldiers. This “experim ent”
was so successful that the armed
forces of America began sending black
nurses to help out throughout Europe
and in the Pacific.
By the end of World War II, it was
clear that American-American nurses
were just as skilled as white nurses. In
the wars to follow they would work side-
by-side with white nurses on all sides of
the battlefield.
