(AP) — Singer Bobby Brown was charged
with battery in an Atlanta, Ga. courtroom last
W ednesday, three days after he allegedly hit
his wife, singer and actress W hitney Houston.

their attorneys met with police.
Brow n is scheduled to appear at a prelim i­
nary hearing Jan. 7.
B ro w n 's law yer, M aurice Bennett, told

pleaded innocent to m arijuana charges in a Jam ai­
can court.
Police said they were conducting routine anti­
drug raids in Jam aica's capital last w eek and found
th re e fu lly -g ro w n m a riju a n a p la n ts in the
entertainer’s hom e w eighing 2 pounds. A police
official initially said officers found 30 plants.
Banton faces m arijuana possession and culti­
vation charges that carry a m axim um penalty o f six
m onths in jail and fines. H e’s scheduled to appear
in court again Jan. 9.
B anton’s “Friends for L ife” album w as nom i­
nated Dec. 4 for best reggae album at the 46th
annual G ram m y A w ards, set for Feb. 8 at the
Staples C enter arena in Los A ngeles.

problem “as husband and w ife.”
H ouston, 40, declined com m ent, but her
lawyer, M ark Trigg, echoed B ennett’s com ­
m ents, saying: “She is trying to resolve the
m atter privately.”
H ouston told police Sunday that Brown
had struck h ero n the left side o f her face with
an open right hand at the couple’s hom e near
A lpharetta. Brown then went to the airport for
a flight to Los A ngeles, the police report said.
Police said Houston had a bruised cheek
and a cut inside her upper lip.
H ouston and Brown have been m arried
since 1992. They have a 10-year-old daughter,
Bobbi Kristina.
