ond day T uesday in the capital m urder
trial o f teenage sniper suspect Lee Boyd
M alvo, accused in last y ear’s sniper
spree that left 10 people dead in M ary­
land, V irginia and W ashington, D.C.
M alvo attorney Craig C ooley told
C ircuit Judge Jane Marum Roush that he
w ould present a defense o f innocent by
reason o f insanity.
He plans to argue that M alvo was so
brainw ashed by fellow suspect John
Allen M uham m ad, 42, that he either did
not know what he was doing or could
not control him self.

Public Policy in C harlottesville.
“A lot o f people see insane individu­
als as both very bad and very scary,”
said H afem eister, w ho also teaches at
the U niversity o f V irginia law school.
"T he risk for the defense is that if they
fail to convince the ju ry , then essentially
they have a defendant w ho has ac­
know ledged doing the deed and being
m entally unstable, w hich creates a very
scary person in the m inds o f the ju ro rs.”

judge and pleaded innocent to m urder
charges in the shooting o f FBI analyst
L inda Franklin, killed during the three
w eeks o f sniper attacks that terrified the
W ashington area last fall.
“N ot guilty," M alvo replied in aclear
voice each tim e he w as asked for his plea
to tw o counts o f capital m urder and to
one count o f using a firearm in a felony.
W hen the judge asked if he was ready
for trial, he answ ered. “Y es. m a'am ."
