rim ental to an environm ent, forcing
out native w ildlife in search o f food
and shelter. O nce native greens are
returned, the ecological balance can
be restored.
Planting trees at schools have
proven to be a w ise investm ent in
kids.
“ Studies have show n that stu­
dents are less aggressive and m ore
creative w hen th ey ’re in a natural
setting. In inner city schools, this is
the one chance that som e students
have to experience nature and plant
anything,” said Rene Eyerly, school
trees m anager.
A ccording to E yerly, kids be­
com e very attached to the trees
they plant, and return years later to
visit the trees.
Friends o f T rees has organized
plantings at m ore than 60 living
classroom s th roughout the city. Its
focus has now shifted to target
betw een 10 and 15 schools with
continued care fo r its greenery.
A bout h a lf o f those schools are in
north and northeast Portland.
Like any real friends. Friends o f
T rees offers support during the
form ative years by checking on
trees and ed ucating volunteers on
how to keep theirs trees grow ing
stro n g .
T he organization also applies for
state and federal grants, and has
p artnerships w ith corporations to
bring dow n the cost o f plantings,
som etim es to as low as $ 15 p er tree.
