Juanes Sweeps Major Latin Grammy Awards
(AP) Three years ago, Juanes
was a relative unknown and won
dering whether hisdecision to move
to Los Angeles and start a solo
career was a good idea.
Last week, theColombian singer-
songwriter was showered with ti ve
Latin Grammys, including album of
the year for “Un Dia Norm al” (A
Normal Day) and record and song
o f the year for “Es Por Ti” (It’s For
You).
“ 1 never thought that this was
going to happen to m e,” said
Juanes, whose album “Un Dia Nor
mal" spent a record 65 weeks on the
Billboard Latincharts. “Threeyears
ago I was lost completely in Los
Angeles.”
Juanes, wearing a black T-shirt
that read, “Se Habla Español,” said
he hoped his win would help people
look at his homeland in a new light.
“ I know a lot o f times, people
have a bad image o f my country,”

he said. "That’s why it’s so impor
tant for me to be here, to represent
the other side o f Colombia.”
After the ceremony, backstage,
he said: “This is the most impres
sive day in my life."
While Juanes was the evening’s
big winner, the show ’s most rous
ing moment came at the start o f the
show. Celia Cruz, who just a year
ago kicked off the Latin Grammys
with an electrifying performance,
was given a posthumous tribute
w ith a medley o f some o f her big
gest hits.
“Azucar!” -Cruz’s trademark ral
lying cry - was the final shout o f the
tribute, performed by Marc Anthony,
Gloria Estefan, Indiaand others. The
Queen of Salsa, who won an award
at the Latin Grammys last year, died
o f a brain tumor in July.
