coach C live C harles died T uesday
afternoon at age 52. C harles was
renow ned for leading the U niver
sity o f Portland to the 2002 national
w om en’s cham pionships.
The official cause o f death has
not been released, but C harles had
a long fight w ith prostate cancer.
An event w as planned by the
Portland T im bers to honor Charles ’
lifetim e achievem ents at the team ’s
season finale on A ug. 29 at PGE|
Park.
C h arles’ num ber No. 3 jersey as
a form er star w ith the Tim bers will
be retired and a perm anent banner
will hang from the rafters o f PGE
Park, also planned before C h arles’
death.

nization w as a very special period
in m y life. It truly w as the start o fall

my fami ly in Portland,” said Charles,
w ho had planned to attend the half­
tim e cerem ony.
An inductee into the O regon
Sports Hall o f Fam e, C harles was
perhaps m ost fam ous for his illus­
trious coaching career at the U n i­
versity o f Portland. In a 2-1 double
overtim e w in over Santa C lara,
C harles led the w om en ’s team to
the sc h o o l’s first-ev er n atio n al
cham pionship in 2002.

for Africa Camp
A contingent o fN B A players from A frica, includ­
ing Portland Trail B lazer center Ruben B oum tje-

Africa 100 Camp, a first o f its kind goodw ill tour o fth e
A frican continent.
The players w ill provide basketball instruction
and educational program s w hile addressing im por­
tant social issues for the top 100 young players from
m ore than 19 A frican countries.
“ I believe it is very im portant to contribute som e­
thing back to your hom eland and I am very proud to
represent the N BA at this cam p ,” said D ikem be
