Both men brought their ques­
tions to an im m igration forum in
Salinas,Calif, where Hispanics make
up about tw o-thirds o f the p opula­
tion, and hold m any o f the jo b s in
the agriculture industry.
The hosts for the forum : a D em o­
cratic congressm an. Rep. Sam Farr;
a D em ocratic state assem blym an,
Sim on Salinas; and local im m igra­
tion advocates.
W hile politicians say the idea
behind such sessions is to allow
immigrants to fullyjoin in American
society, analysts note they also
help create a new voter base am ong
the n atio n ’s largest m inority group
-ju s t in tim e for next y e a r’s presi­
dential election.
“ It's going to add new folks to
the rolIs and it’s their beliefthey will
vote for D em ocrats,” said Larry
G onzalez, d irector o f the National
A ssociation o f Latino Elected and
A ppointed O fficials. “T here is a
sense o f loyalty to those w ho help
them through the process. They
rem em ber that you w ere the person
w ho helped hold their hand.
A t the w orkshops, im m igrants
will receive help in filling out natu­
ralization forms. T h ey ’ll have their
photos taken for the applications
and get advice on interview s, En­
glish proficiency exam s and civics
tests.

featured on a reality d ating show that reflects H is­
panic culture, T elem undo executives said.
“ La C enicienta,” o r C inderella, film ed in Palm
Springs, will airo n theS panish-languagenetw ork for
six w eeks beginning in Septem ber.
"T he first reality series that show s the w orld how
to fall in love, Latina style,” trum pets a prom otional
spot for the series.
“ In true Latino fashion, y o u ’re not ju s t m arrying
the bride, y o u ’re m arrying the entire fam ily," Jim

tive officer, told the T elevision C ritics A ssociation.

H olden and Pacific Pow er have
also dabbled in the affordable hous­
ing m arket by creating the Neigh-
borhixxl Partnership Fund by w ork­
ing w ith neighborhood associa­
tions in north and northeast Port­
land and the Youth t iang Task Force
to “help change the dynam ic o f the
neighborhood,” H olden said.

and northeast Portland.
A nother utility option in the
w orks is a city proposal to form a
m unicipality, running its ow n util­
ity com pany for the city, rather than
the county.

w as doing fine before Enron and
has consistently done good w ork
since E nron’s bankruptcy.
“ W ith P o rtlan d try in g to dig
