O liver “T uku” M tukudzi per­
form s on W ednesday, July 30, fol­
low ed by Linda T illery and the
C ultural H eritage C h o ir on T hurs­
day, July 31 and A im ee M ann on
Friday, A ug. 1.
T uku is noted for uplifting and
hope-infused perform ances. With
40 album s to his credit, he perform s
in the Shona language o f Z im ba­
bw e as w ell as English. His lyrics
invariably deal with social and eco­
nomic issues. In the face o f political
turm oil and a horrific A ID S epi­
dem ic that has sw ept the African
continent, T u k u ’s hum or and opti­
m ism creates an appeal that crosses
generations.

“a treasure,” but has also used his
m usic as inspiration for the song
“O ne B elief A w ay” on her album
Fundam ental. The Utne Reader has

series. T illery is a veteran vocalist,
percussionist, producer and cul­
tural historian. Since the 1960s, her
powerful, shimmering alto voice has
been show cased in such groups as

S en d er’s and Bobby M cF errin’s
V oicestra. T he ch o ir’s collection
includes intoned sermons, folk tales
and dance.

and her notorious independence
from m ajor record labels. A cru­
sader for the fight o f unfairly treated
artists ag ain st co rp o rate labels,
M ann has found success in her
ow n w ay. C ritics gushed over her

stream attention has follow ed her
through contributions to TV show
M elrose Place (“T h at’s Just W hat
Y ou A re” ), the soundtrack to Paul
Thom as A nderson's M agnolia, and

a turn on the Lilith F air tour.
