Trail Blazers president Steve
Patterson said the team is working
with union representatives to get
Stoudamire into a drug rehabilita
tion program. Patterson said the
arrest has again compromised an
image the team is trying to rebuild
after Stoudamire's and other play
ers’ previous drug and legal prob
lems.
Patterson also said he would
void Stoudam ire’s contract if he
could, but hasn’t found a provi
sion in the contract that would
allow him to do so.
Stoudamire has been arrested
twice before on drug charges.
In N ovem ber, S to u d am ire
agreed to attend drug and alcohol
counseling and stay out o f legal
trouble for one year to avoid misde
meanor charges after he and team
mate Rasheed Wallace were pas
sengers in a vehicle that was

turned up a small amount o f mari
juana, police said.
If convicted o f the latest charges,
Stoudamire would face a mandatory
sentenceofoneday in jail because of
that previous agreement.
Earlier in 2002, Stoudamire was
charged with a felony after police
found a large bag o f marijuana in his
home while responding to a burglar
alarm. A judge declared the search
illegal.

School Board, repre

With only a two-and-a-half-
year institutional memory, senior
school board members have ex
pressed concern about a school

the first time in many years, none

expiring terms ran for re-election
in May, resulting in a rare occur

school board members are new.
Kicking o ff a new era on the

Medical Marijuana
Cards On Sale
Program runs a
financial surplus,
and passes the
savings along to
low-income
clients
(A P )- Oregon’smedicalmari-
j uana program is running a finan
cial surplus, and will get rid o f it
by reducing fees for people who
qualify for federal poverty assis
tance.
Oregon is the first o f the nine
states that allows marijuana to be
smoked for medicinal purposes
to offer discounts to low-income
people, advocates o f the drug
say.
“This sounds like a pioneering
idea," said Dale Gieringer, an ac
tivist with the National Organiza
tion for Reform in Marijuana Law,
in a telephone interview from
Oakland, Calif.
“States should encourage this
medicine," he said. “It’s very eco
nomical and helps people reduce
their pharmaceutical bills."
U nder O re g o n ’s v o ter-ap
proved program, the state De
partment o f Human Services issues
medical marijuana cards for$ 150. It
then charges a $ 150 annual renewal
fee.
Cards are commonly issued for
AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis or
glaucoma. Some doctors sign off
on cards for back pain or head
aches.
The state has issued m ore than
5,500 cards since 1999, and the
popularity o f the program has
brought a $300,000 surplus over
the past two years, said Mary
Leverette, the p ro g ram 's direc
tor.
Beginning July 1, low-income
people who qualify for Supplemen
tal Social Security Income or the
Oregon Health Plan, the state’s
version o f Medicaid, can apply for
acard for$50. They will also pay $50
for the renewal fee.
Everybody else will continue to
pay $ 150 for new applications. The
renewal fee for everybody was re
duced to $100.
The other states with medical
marijuana laws are: California,
W ashington, A lask a, H aw aii,
Maine, Nevada, M aryland and
Colorado. Some state’seharge only
nominal fees, such as H aw aii's$25.
There is no fee in California.
