(A P) — C hris Rock will be back as host
o f the M TV V ideo M usic A w ards. But he
acknow ledges that his stand-up skills are
a little rusty.
So the com edian is going on a cross­
country club tour to prepare for the 20th
annual aw ards show Aug. 28 at Radio City
M usic Hall.
“ I h a v e n 't perform ed in a lo-o-o-o-ng
tim e,” Rock said.
A fter starring in the E m m y-w inning
“C hris Rock Show " on H B O in the late
’90s, h e ’s been focusing on film s the past
few years, including “ D own to E arth,” a
rem ak eo f'H eav en Can W ait"; "B ad C om ­
pany” with A nthony H opkins; and this
y ear’s “ Head o f State,” his directorial d e­
but, in w hich he starred as a presidential
candidate.
Rock w on’t announce his com edy show
dates ahead o f tim e - he w ouldn’t even say
w here the tour will begin next week. T ick­
ets will go on sale in each city ju st 24 hours
in advance.
But after having hosted the irreverent
awards show in 1997and 1999, Rock knows
that much o f the com edy springs organi­
cally as the evening progresses.
"H al f the tim e the presenters d o n ’t read
w hat’s on the cue cards and you never
know w hen D iana Ross is going to grab
L il’ K im ’s (breast), and y o u ’d hate to m iss
that because y o u ’re putting on som ething
from Banana Republic.”
Rock w as referring to one o f the m ore
outrageous m om ents in V ideo M usic
