“They’rebig. They’re everywhere.”

“It’s huge because they tran
scend tennis,” U.S. captain Billie
Jean King said. “They’re just so
popular. When they play, it’s very
extra special.”

The Czechs learned the hard way.
They were unable to win a set against
the world’s No. I ranked player,
Serena, and third-ranked Venus.
“My serve was cooking a little
more,” Serena said after the clinch
ing victory. “It’s a wonderful expe
rience. I really love it. Go USA.”
The United States took a 2-0 lead
into Sunday, and Serena needed

(A P )— A flerN ick Van E xel’s
buzzer-beating 3-pointer from
near m idcourt gave the Dallas
M avericks a halftim e lead, the
Portland Trail Blazers could have
given up.
They’d already lost IO straight
playoffs games, and were two quar
ters away from a third straight first-
round sweep.
Maybe the Mavericks expected
that reaction, but the Blazers re
fused to play along. Portland re
sponded with a 2 1 -0 run in the third
period and won 98-79 Sunday night
to force a fifth game Wednesday
night in Dallas.
“Their backs were against the
wall and they wanted to show their
fans that they could still play bas
ketball and that they can win
gam es,” said Mavs forward Dirk
Nowitzki, who had 26 points. “They
gave us a hard fight and ended up
blowing us out.”
Still, the Blazers know they still
have a long way to go before mak
ing this series competitive, espe
cially considering that Dallas hasn't
lost four straight games all season.
“They’restillinthedriver’sseat,”
Portland guard Damon Stoudamire
acknowledged. “But if we can get
this next game, I think the pressure
will shift to them a little bit.”
The top priority for coach Don
Nelson will be getting points out o f
Steve Nash. He was scoreless in 2 1
minutes in G am e4,m issingall four
shots and not making it to the foul
line.
Michael Finley’s offense also
was missing. He was 3-for-12 while
battling flu symptoms.
Coach Maurice Cheeks is asking
his team to “jus, win one gam e.”
Then he'll ask for another, and an
other.
“ If we can win one game, then
maybe we can change this series,”
said Cheeks.
But winning again might prove
difficult because Portland will be
without guard Derek Anderson,
who had knee surgery Sunday.
Cheeks is hoping guard Scottie
Pippen and center Arvydas Sabonis
can return. Both sat out Game 4 with
injuries.

The G35 clearly is the ultimate driving sports sedan. I, offers a power
engine, sport suspension, performance tires and excellent braking.
Taking o ff you can feel the power and hear the roar o f the engine. I
found the G35 to have very impressive handling providing stability
in com ers with quick precise steering. The bold avant-garde design
set it apart from the look o fth e Japanese market. The G35 was built
on the Nissan’s newest platform, which it will share with the 35OZ and
FX45crossover utility. Driving theG35 feel likebeinginaracecarwith
