The prominent visual ideals in
American propaganda are specifically
female - the Statue of Liberty and the
Scales o f Justice. What if the visual
ideals of violence and war were
female, as well? .

ers what is normally viewed as an
‘everyday’ object. Ross presents,
for example, a hammer or duct tape
or a cigarette, and then she shows
a photograph o f the object being
utilized in its intended use, to nail
wood or to tape something together
or to smoke.
Then the third part of her work
features a narrative panel with the
words o f an abused woman as she
recounts how that object was used
to inflict pain, forexample a hammer
to hit, duct tape to keep her from
screaming and a cigarette to bum
flesh.
For those who have been fortu
nate enough not to experience do
mestic abuse, the show is an eye
opener. For those who have them
selves been victims o f abuse, these
common household items and the
stories that accompany them may
bring tears to your eyes.

After many years of working as
an advocate for survivors o f do

Ross put together “Domestic Rela

domestic abuse - something that
one-third o f all women experience
regardless o f race, class, religion or
sexual orientation.
