C ongressm an John Lew is, a fam ed civil
rights leader and lifelong advocate forpeace
and non-violent struggle, m ade a stirring
appearance in Portland Saturday as he called
fo rp e a c e in the M iddle East.
L ew is said haw ks in g overnm ent are
d o w nplaying the pow erful anti-w ar m ove
m ent that has draw n mi I lions ofpeople w orld
w ide into the streets to protest a potential
w ar w ith Iraq.
