Jefferson High School suffered
a shocking loss in the first game of
the first round of the OSAA/U.S.
Bank/Les Schwab 4A state boys
basketball championship Tuesday
afternoon at M emorial Coliseum.
South Medford scored a 3-point
basket off the glass as time ran out
to win the game, 53-52.
The contest was close much of
the way with the score tied 26 all at
halftime. The Democrats led by 4
points after three quarters, but
Medford came out strong in the
fourth opening the period with an
8-2 scoring run.
A large contingent o f Jefferson
fans attended the 1:30p.m. contest.
Lincoln High School, the Port
land Interscholastic League' s other
entry in the tournament, will face
S o u th rid g e o f B e a v e rto n on
W ednesday.
Lincoln is considered as good a
bet as anyone to win the cham pion
ship.
The team has a 20-and-4 record,
a num ber two ranking and a ló
game winning streak.

(AP) — Portland Trail Blazers forward Bonzi Wells
was suspended for a game by coach Maurice Cheeks for
“conduct considered detrimental to the team.”
Wells was suspended for Tuesday night’s game against
the SuperSonics in Seattle. The team did not specify the
reasons for the suspension.
Wells is second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.6
points and 5.4 rebounds.
In his fourth year, Wells has been suspended twice by
the NBA this season.
In November he served a one-game suspension for
spitting on San Antonio's Danny Ferry. The next month,
he was suspended two games for his part in a post-game
brawl with the Golden State Warriors in Oakland.
