A s you know, i f I were standing at the beginning o f time, with the possibility ofgeneral and panoramic view of the whole human history up to now, and the Alm ighty said to me, “ Martin Luther K in g, which age would you like to live in?” — I would take my mental flight by Egypt through, or rather across the Red Sea, through the wilderness on toward the promised land. And in spite o f its magnificence, I wouldn’t stop there. 1 would move on by Greece, and take my mind to Mount Olympus. And I would see Plato, A ristotle, Socrates, Euripides and Aristophanes assembled around the Parthenon as they discussed the great and eternal issues o f reality. But 1 wouldn’t stop there. 1 would go on, even to the great heyday.” ...Let us rise up tonight with a greater readi ness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days o f challenge to make Am erica what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation. And I want to thank God, once more, for allowing me to be here with you.” ...Well, 1 don’t know what w ill happen now. W e’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I ’ve been to the mountaintop. A nd 1 don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longev ity has its place. But I ’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do G o d ’s w ill. And H e’s allowed me to go up to the moun tain. And I ’ve looked over. And I ’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, w ill get to the promised land. And I ’m happy, tonight. I ’m not worried about anything. I ’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory o f the coming o f the Lord.” B illy R e e p ’ s R £ B^ estaurant January 15, 2001 “...let u s m ove o n in th e se PO W ER FU L days o f challenge to m ak e A m erica w h at it o u g h t to b e .” M artin Luther King Jr. - Alabama i960 We are honored to have this special opportunity to join The Portland Observer in recognizing and celebrating the numerous , valuable contributions made by ; Martin Luther King Jr. and his family. r Presents In Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.s Birthday The Northwest’s premier Soul Diva The Linda Hornbuckle Band CITY OF PORTLAND Dinner Reservations: (503) 493-8127 Schedule of events: www.billyreeds.com 2808 N E MLK, Jr. Blvd. Harvey Locket (503) 823-7892 www.cleanrivers-pdx org www.ci.portland.or.us/purchasc/purchasc.htm MULTNOMAH COUNTY $ $ METRO Herman Brume (5 03)981-5111 Ext. 24266 www.co.mullnQmah.or.us/contracts ô January 17th & 18th 8:30 PM-12:30 AM Open 7 Days a week Happy Hour 7 Days a week 3 PM-6.30 PM Live music 5 nights a week Lunch 11 AM-3 PM Daily environmental S ervices \ C ity OF PORTLAND Bureau o f Purchases Buyline: (503) 823-6855 C innaM on Williams: (503) 797-1816 M O M I M ACit www.mctro-region.ory PO RT OF P O R T LA N D Rhonnda Edmiston: (503)944-7587 www.portotportland.com Advertise with diversity in The Portland Observer 503.388.0033 or email: ads(a;portlandobserver.com midst are those with vision Kaiser Permanente salutes one such visionary, Martin Luther King, Jr. Kaiser Permanente embraces everyone’s unique contributions KAISER PERMANENTE www.kp.org/nw
