as racist. (AP photo)
New Leader Pledges
to Repair Damage
(AP) — Senate Republicans
unanimously elected Bill Frist
on Monday to lead them in the
next Congress, and began try
ing to shift their focus from Trent
Lott’s inflammatory remarks to
tax cuts and the rest of Presi
dent Bush’s agenda.
GOP senators used a confer
ence call to anoint the eight-
year Senate veteran from Ten
nessee. Among them was an
apologetic Lott, the M ississip
pian who abruptly quit the job
Friday, two weeks after touch
ing off a political maelstrom
when he lauded Sen. Strom
Thurmond's pro-segregationist
presidential run of 1948.
Many Republicans are wor
ried that Lott’s remarks have
hurt GOP efforts to recruit sup
port from minority voters. Frist
indicated he would focus on re
pairing that damage.
“We must dedicate ourselves
to healing those wounds of di vi-
sion that have been reopened so
prominently during the past few
weeks,” he said.
Frist, 50, equated his new
leadership post with his original
career as a heart transplant sur
geon. Frist still performs volun
teer operations in this country
and in annual medical missions
to Africa.
The haste with which leaders
scheduled the cal 1 — three days
after Lott quit, and four days
after Frist announced his candi
dacy to succeed him — under
lined the party’s desire to put
the Lott episode behind them.
Frist began his remarks to
reporters on a religious theme,
saying he and his wife went to
church Sunday night to ponder
the change about to occur in
their lives. And he cited a bibli
cal passage that he said reads,
“In his heart, a man plans his
course, but the Lord determines
his steps.”
