drastically under a plan to make the thoroughfare a one-way street. Proponents want to push half
the street's traffic onto Couch Street for a more pedestrian friendly environment on Burnside. The
Burnside Bridge would remain two-way. The project is set to be implemented within the next five
years, if $40 million in funding becomes available.

(AP) — A Portland business
man has filed a lawsuit against U.S.
Bank, claiming he was refused ser
vice because he was wearing sun
glasses, looked suspicious and is
black.
Xavier Allen, 38, seeks unspeci
fied monetary damages for “embar
rassment, humiliation, anxiety and
pain.”
On Aug. 30, 2001, Allen was
wearing sunglasses and a Panama-
style hat as he waited to deposit
money from his catering business
at an east Portland branch.
U.S. Bancorp officials say a su
pervisor asked Allen to remove the
glasses as a security precaution.
He removed them, but by the time
he reached the teller, she refused to
serve him and told him to go to
another line.
A white customer in the bank at
the same time as Allen was allowed
to do business while wearing sun
glasses, the complaint says.
A llen, ow ner o f Hot Dog
Extraordinaire and Extraordinaire
Catering, said he later sent two of
his white employees into the bank
wearing the same sunglasses and
hat. Both times, the men made their
deposits without a word from bank
officials, according to the complaint.
