budget cuts have killed music edu
cation in the traditional classroom.
“The main reason for Ethos is
to bring music back to the kids
w ho a r e n ’t g e ttin g it in the
schools,” Charles said.
Lewis developed a sim ilar pro
gram in Cam bridge, Mass, from
scratch. He then brought the
program ’s outline to Portland.
T h e P o r tla n d c e n te r is
equipped with a piano room , hip-
hop room, a drum room and re
cording studios. Ethos offers af
fordable lessons on a variety o f
instrum ents and m usical styles.
“More affluent families can pay
for lessons,” said Lewis. “W e tar
get m iddle and low er incom e
kids.”
A sliding scale and scholar
ships are available to bring the
low cost down even further.
“Eight w eeks o f lessons may
be as little as 20 dollars,” Lewis
said.
Students w ho c a n ’t afford to
buy or rent their own instrum ents
can check them out from the
Ethos collection. Everything from
drum s, to amps, to guitars are
tiistkictive entertainment for the distinctive crow d.

The program gets introduced at

music and dance firsthand.
At a recent assembly at Boise

Teachers at Ethos are mostly
university students or professional
musicians.
Lewis and Barba have seen kids
come out o f their shells as they
open up to music and gain confi
dence in its world o f sound, rhythm,
and melody.
“ Kids love it,” Lewis said. “It
really builds self-esteem.”
“There are a lot o f academic ben
efits,” Lewis said. “Studies show
that kids with a background in music
score higher on SAT’s.”
“Its constructive,” Barba said.
“It’s an easy way for kids to com
municate.”
W hile Ethos focuses its pro
grams on school age children, the
group also offers classes for
adults.
