Six Men Sentenced in
1969 Race Riot Murder
(A P )— Six w hite men w ere handed sentences o f
o f Y o rk ’s form er m ayor and tw o other white men. The

death o f a black w om an during a 1969 race riot that has
guilty and face a possible 20 years in prison.
T he defendants apologized before they w ere sen­
violence betw een blacks and w hites in York. D uring
tenced, but the victim ’s daughter com plained that
the riots, a white police officer w as also killed, m ore
none of them had expressed any sorrow for the
than 60 people w ere injured and 100 w ere arrested.
A llen was shot to death at tw ilight after she go t out
slaying o f L illie B elle A llen until they w ere in court,
w here an apology m ight lessen their punishm ent.
A ll six m en pleaded guilty in A ugust, and som e
testified for the prosecution in the trial earlier this year

northeast Portland that closed L om bard Street
for several hours.
Shortly a fte r4 a.m . on Sunday police arrived
at the scene but found n o victim . They later
learned that 25-year-old D om ingo G onzales
w as pronounced dead at Em anuel H ospital.
He had been transported there by private
car.
N eighbors say they hear shots fired from the
area on a reg u lar basis.
O thers say that residents o f the house w here
the shooting occurred often host loud parties
last until m orning.
A uthorities are searching for evidence and
speaking w ith w itnesses.

Hate Crime Participant Finishes Prison Term

B rew ster, w ho participated in one o f
O regon’s m ost infam ous hate crim es, was
released from prison T uesday.
B rew ster w as co nvicted o f first-de­
gree m anslaughter in the 1988 baseball-
bat killing o f an E thiopian man in S outh­
east Portland. The death o f the man,
M ulugeta Seraw , led civil rights activists
to dub Portland “Skinhead C ity.”
The crim e prom pted legislators to e n ­
act O regon’s groundbreaking hate crim es
law, and sparked a violent street-level
fight betw een P o rtlan d ’s skinheads and
their opponents. A nd the m urder led to
acivil trial that financially crippled one of
the n atio n ’s m ost pow erful racists.
The O regon B oard o f Parole and Post-
Prison Supervision considered Brewster
for parole on M ay 23,2000. B utthe board
declined to release him then, citing a
w orrisom e psychological evaluation.

B rew ster’s release on Nov. 19,2002. His
parole w ill be revoked if he drinks alco­
hol, associates w ith gang m em bers or
contacts Seraw ’ s fam ily .
The 33-year-old inm ate appears to
have no ties to racist groups, said Steven
Stroud, a form er skinhead w ho leads
O regon S potlight, a P ortland-based o r­
g an iza tio n th at track s hate groups.
B rew ster has a strong fam ily support
system , has secured w ork and “has a lot
m ore going fo r him than the average
inm ate upon release,” Stroud said.

B rew ster w as 19 w hen he got into a
traffic fight with Seraw in the early m orn­
ing hours o f N ov. 13,1988. He leapt from
his car, hurled racial slurs and punched
the sm aller man. Ken M ieske, w ho w as
also in the car, m oved behind Seraw and
clubbed him in the head w ith a baseball
bat. W hen the East A frican buckled,
M ieske delivered the blow that crushed
his skull. A ccording to a prison spokes­
w om an, M ieske’s earliest possible re ­
lease date is in 2024.
