day, O ct. 19.
T he A frican A m erican H ealth
C o alitio n is sp o n so rin g th e free
event as an in n o v ativ e, educational
ap p ro ach to reduce m ajo r chronic
d iseases like d iab etes, co m p lica­
tions and card io v ascu lar disease.
T he focus o f the day is o n p re­
v en tin g fu tu re h ealth p ro b lem s.
H ealthcare professionals will offer
den tal and screen in g w ork; blood
level testing; an em ia testing; foot
m assage and fo o t care; an d vision
and hearing tests. A blood m obile
and d o o r prizes w ill also be a part
o f the event.
Constitutional Rights Rally
A rearesidentsare invited to march
in northeast Portland Saturday, Oct. 19
to increase police accountability, stop
racial profiling and put an end to dis-
criminatory social services practices.
The event will begin with a rally at
11 a m . at M allory Church, 126 N.E.
A lberta The group will then w alk to
Irving Park on the com er o f Northeast
I a' and Prem ont foraclosing rally with
hotdogs and beverages at 1 p.m.
T he N A A C P and the Police A c­
countability C am paign are sponsor­
ing the event to raise aw areness o f the
14ü' A m endm ent, which forbids the
abridgem ent o f any citizens' rights
and calls for fair and equal treatment.
O rganizers w ould like to see city
governm ent support local neighbor­
hoods through positive m eans, such
as the end the application o f drug free
zones only in com m unities o f color
and respect the sanctity o f the family
by ending the arbitrary rem oval o f
children by C hildren’s Services.
. Another goal o f the event is to
increase aw areness about discrim ina­
tory application o f m andatory sen­
tencing and property forfeiture, to pro­
mote economic de velopm ent that sup­
ports historic com m unities by stop­
ping gentrification in com m unities o f
color.
