if more minorities own homes

Tuesday his goal o f getting 5.5
m illion more black and H ispanic
fam ilies into their own hom es will
give the U.S. econom y a $256 bil
lion shot in the arm over the d e
cade.
"This project is not only good
for the soul o f the country, it’s
good for the pocketbook o f the
country as w ell,” Bush said at a
daylong W hite H ouse Conference

“T he idea of encouraging new
hom eow nership and the m oney
that will be circulated as a result o f
people purchasing homes will mean
people are m ore likely to find a jo b
in A m erica,” he said.
A lm ost three-quarters o f w hite
American families are homeowners,
but the sam e can be said for less
than h alf o f black and H ispanic
fam ilies, or ju st over 13 m illion
h ouseholds.

C ollege o f E ducation to better pre
pare them to teach the grow ing
num ber o f language m inority stu
dents in their classroom s.
This fall, the teachers will begin
the coursew ork to com plete their
Bilingual Education or English as a
Second Language endorsem ents
through a com bination o f on-line
distance education courses and a
sum m er institute. T he new pro

The V ancouver teachers were
selected from 170 applicants state
wide for free enrollment in the prepa
ration program .
The project funds the prepara
tion for tw o cohorts o f 15 teachers
each, beginning in the fall o f 2002,
Egbert said. Because the courses
are offered through the Internet,
the teachers will rem ain in their
hom e com m unities that can be lo
cated anyw here in W ashington.
There is a critical need for teach
ers prepared to teach language
m inority students in W ashington,
Egbert added. Language m inority,
or non-native speakers o f English,
currently com prise 23 percent o f all
students in the state, and repre
sent 96 language groups.
