Jones Retains Undisputed Championship Title
(AP) Roy Jones Jr. cam e to put
on a show at the Rose G arden in
Portland Saturday - and that was
before he even threw a punch
against C linton W oods.
Jones opened his light heavy­
weight title defense w ith a d an c­
ing, rapping ex h ib itio n in the
stands, then cam e dow n into the
ring to show W oods w hat he really
does best.
For the better part o f six rounds
he did ju st that, pounding a gam e
but badly outclassed W oods w ith
lightning-quick punches until the
challenger’s co m er finally told the
referee to stop it at 1:29 o f the sixth.

T he crow d that nearly filled the
arena loved it all, cheering Jones as
he put on one o f the m ost flam boy­
ant ring entrances ev er — co m ­
plete w ith him rapping before six
dancing girls after a hidden elev a­
tor raised him into the stands. Then
they cheered even m ore w hen he
easily disposed o f W oods.
“I’m a bad d u d e,” Jones said. “I
stayed focused and kept going.
No disrespect to him , but 1 had a
little fun to n ig h t.”

the dream s o f the citizens w ere lost
to the great flood.
W hile the city o f V anport was
w a sh e d a w a y , th e le g a c y o f
V anport C ollege lives on today in
Portland State U niversity. A nd al­
though the m ix o f cultures chal­
lenged the region’s prejudices in
the ‘4 0 ’s, V anportC ity helped cre­
ate the roots o f diversity the city o f
Portland now celebrates.
