He underw ent o pen-heart sur

pacem aker inserted in N ovem ber
2000.
The Hall o f Fameral ways wanted
to be know n as the greatest hitter
ever, and his stats backed up the
claim.
A two-time M VP who twice won
the Tripie Crown, W illiams hit .344
league at-bat in 1960.
W illiams' greatest achievement
cam e in 1941 when he baited .406,
getting six hits in a doubleheader
on the final day o f the season.
W illiam s contended his eye
sight was so keen he could pick up
individual stitches on a pitched ball
and could see the exact moment his
bat connected with it.
He also asserted he could smell
the burning wood o f his bat when
he fouled a ball straight back, just
missing solid contact.
W illiam s was a perfectionist
w ho w orked tirelessly at his craft
and had no tolerance for those
less dedicated. He was single-
m inded and stubborn, a player
w ho reduced the gam e to its sim
plest elem ents: batter vs. pitcher,
one trying to outsm art the other.
In those instances, he usually won.
