Oregon’s Freddie Jones Drafted 14th
Oregon guard Freddie Jones
was a surprising 14th pick in last
w eek’s NBA draft, going to the
Indiana Pacers.
Jones, at 6-foot-4,210 pounds,
averaged 18.6 points per game
and helped lead the Ducks to the
final eight of the NCAA tourna
ment.
Jones went to Barlow High
School in Gresham.
He did not live up to his poten
tial during his first three years at
Oregon, but he came on strong as
a senior. He started all but two
games, when he was benched af
ter a slow start. He responded to
the message sent by coach Ernie
Kent and helped the Ducks win
their first outright conference title
in 57 years.
He also hit his first game-win
ning basket, with one second left
at USC in a 67-65 victory. The
Ducks clinched the Pac-10 title
outright two days later, when
Jones hit the cl inching basket in a
65-62 victory over UCLA.
With the Pacers, Jones will join
ex-Trail Blazer Jermaine O ’Neal.

Venus Williams Sails Into Semifinals
(A P)— Venus Williams swept
to another easy straight-set v ic
tory Tuesday as she m oved into
the sem ifinals and closer to her
third straight W im bledon title.
The to p -seed ed W illiam s,
who has dropped one set in five
m atches, crushed 48th-ranked
Elena Likhovtseva 6 -2,6-0 in 44
m inutes in the d ay ’s opening
match on Centre Court.
It was W illiam s’ eighth con
secutive win over the R ussian,
all in straight sets.
L ik h o v ts e v a , th e o n ly

w om en’s quarters, was helpless
against the A m erican’s relent
less pow er game and won only
seven points in the second set.
,“I'm ju st trying to play more
solid every round, garner each
point for myself,’’ W illiams said.
“W hen it happens like it did
today, it’s very nice 1 think. I
d o n ’t think she gave me a lot of
errors. I had to produce most of
the shots and put a lot o f pres
sure on her.”
W illiam s has spent only 4‘/2
hours on court in her run to the
sem ifinals and rem ains a strong
favorite to becom e the first
woman to win three straight
titles since Steffi G raf in 1991-
93.
“Now I expect for m yself to
be alm ost perfect,” she said.
“W hen I first started, first get
ting to the quarterfinals, it was
all new. But now 1 expect to be
there.”
W illiam s w ill next face the
w inner o f the quarterfinal be
tween No. 4 M onica Seles and
No. 6 Justine H enin, whom she
beat in last y ear’s final.
No. 3 Jennifer Capriati was to
