Anything but ordinary. That’s putting it mildly when
describing Avril Lavigne. A skater-punk, a dynamic
spirit, a true wild chi Id. One o f those rare creatures who
started wowing people with her voice and character
at around age 2. A small-town kid who couldn’t sit still
in class, but had the confidence and determination to
take off, virtually on her own, to hone her songwriting
skills in New York City and Los Angeles. This Cana
dian teen sensation impacts with her style o f sassy
vocals. On a writing trip to NYC, Avril caught the
attention o f Antonio “LA" Reid, who snapped her up
and signed her to Arista.

As Robert Gordon brilliantly details in “Can’t Be
Satisfied,” Muddy Waters invented electric blues
and created the template for the rock and roll band
and its wild lifestyle. Gordon excavates M uddy’s
mysterious past and early career, taking us from
Mississippi fields to postwar Chicago street cor
ners. We meet the men and women who sur
rounded Muddy, riding shotgun with him as his
style evolves.
The blues is feeling good about feeling bad.
Gordon doesn’t shy from the contradictions, he
embraces them, gamering the same energy in
storytelling that fueled Muddy’s music making.
There’s never been a comprehensive biography o f
Muddy until now. And with “C an’t Be Satisfied,”
there will never be a need for another.
