City Parks Cut
Services, 31 Staff
Portland’s neighborhood parks will look different this summer—
longer grass, fuller garbage cans and restrooms that close earlier
than usual. The changes are due to the Portland Parks and Recre
ation decison to cut 31 staff positions and reduce services in order
to cut $2.2 million from its budget.
People who participate in some recreation and after-school pro
grams will also feel the belt tighten as community schools close
along with indoor swim pools at Buckman and Multnomah Learning
Center schools.
"These service cuts are required because of a shortfall in city
funds. And, after years of taking on more responsibility, we are
squeezed to the point where direct services will stop or be cut back
severely,” said parks director Charles Jordan.
A measure on the May ballot to reinstate the services and further
restore and renovate the park system received 70 percent voter
support, but failed to pass because the required 50 percent voter turn
out was not met.
Voters will have another opportunity to vote on this measure in
November.

safety officials are reminding driv
ers that children will be crossing
streets and riding bikes in differ
ent areas than they do during the
school year. Those changing hab
its have the potential to contrib
ute to a tragedy.
“You do not want to hit a child
with your car. Imagine hearing the
crash, feeling the impact and see
ing a little kid on the pavement,”
said Rick Waring, pedestrian and
bicycle safety coordinator for the
Oregon Department of Transpor
tation. “That would be a horrible,
wrenching experience you’d live
with for years to come.”

"Absent an agreement with
SEIU (Service Employees Inter
national Union), the board is ex
pected to vote on whether to sub
contract for custodial services at
th e ir Ju ly 8 m e e tin g ,” J|im
Scherzinger, interim superinten
dent for the district, said last week.
The board has adopted a bud
get for 2002-03 that includes $36
million in cuts.
Scherzinger stated that a sav
ings of $4.5 million in the first year
and $5.3 million in the second year
could be attained if the district
significantly reduced the rate it
pays for custodial services.

stray ball or to cross against the
traffic signal. “Kids sometimes do
unpredictable and unwise things,”
he said. “As adults we must be
aware of this and drive very cau
tiously.”
