Good in the Hood Festival Celebrates Diversity
Weekend event will bring
out city’s best ethnic
food, dance and music

It’s m usic and food galore at this
w eekend’s G ood in the H ood festival
that celebrates the inner c ity ’s cultural
diversity. Talented perform ers will take
the stage for this four-day party event.
A kick o ff celebration with some en­
tertainm ent begins on Thursday, June
27 at M cM enam ins K ennedy School,
located at 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave.
The follow ing day, the celebration
m oves to Holy Redeem er Area School
Cam pus, 127 N. Portland Blvd., and
continues through - Sunday, June 30,
featuring a mix o f ethnic dancing and
the sum m er’s “h o ttest” music.

Reggae with Chatta Addy, blues played
by N orm an Sylvester and other local
acts are perform ing. Everyone is en ­
couraged to bring their lawn chair and
blankets for the shows.
Besides good m usic and dancing,
goods can be purchased at the interna­
tional m arketplace and everyone can
taste different cuisines offered by many
food vendors.
Also featured is the annual Good in
the H ood Parade that will go along
M artin L uther King Jr. Blvd. It begins
on Saturday, June 29 at 11 a m.
Motivating last year's Good in the Hood crowd are the Lions of Batucada, a group o f drummers and dancers who play African-influenced dance music of Brazil.
This year, the tradition o f good music ancTdance performances continue with the 2002 Good in the Hood festival beginning Thursday, June 27 and continuing
through Sunday, June 30.

Yosh Ida's Sand in the City
Watch 17 corporate teams shovel,
stomp and carve - mixing 270 tons o f
sand, fun and community spirit as they
create giant sand sculptures for a con­
test that’s on Friday, July 12, from 10
a.m. -4 p.m. at the PioneerCourthouse
Square. Awards given at 5 p.m. Enter
to win a giant package o f goodies. Lots
o f family fun all weekend, especially
for the kids.

and the changes being
brought about by light rail at
the future site o f a light rail
station at North Killingsworth
and Interstate. The Jefferson
High School student took
part in a Tri-Met public art
program to create temporary
public artworks for Interstate
Max. The study included art
field trips, creating
conceptual designs and
building site models.
Portland Farmer’s Market
More than 2,000 fresh berry shortcakes
will be given free and dozens ofberry
farmers will be selling pints and quarts
piled high with fresh raspberries and
strawberries during the Berry Festival
on Thursday, June 27 and Saturday,
June 29 at th e P o rtla n d S tate
University’scampus in the Park Blocks,
between Montgomery and Harrison
Streets.
Blue Lake Regional Park
Wednesdays are special this summer
at M etro's Blue Lake Regional Park
when Naturally for Kids offers young
visitors lots o f things to do. Spend the
day at the park beginning with nature
crafts from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the
Clatsop picnic shelter. Youngsters will
learn about nature and make a craft to
take home. Cost is $2 per child for

Hike Northwest Portland
Mazamas leads casual hikesexploring
the streets and trails o f Northwest
Portland at 6 p.m. every Tuesday and
Thursday. This is a great way to meet
other hikers, plan a weekend trip or just
to maintain your fitness after work and

Lead Poisoning Prevention
Workshop
The most common sources o f lead
poisoning are found in and around
homes. Come to a workshop and learn
about the effects and sources o f lead
poisoning; how to test for lead; and
prevention tips. The class will be on

City Puts New Electronic Parking Meters Online
P ortland’s new parking meters went
on-line M onday dispensing receipts
for curbside parking along designated
dow ntow n blocks as a replacem ent to
the manual turn key m eters at each
parking space.
The new “ S m a rtM e te rs” accept
coins, credit and debit cards, and pre­
paid “Sm artC ards.” The user must se­
lect the am ount o f parking time and
adhere the parking receipt to the w in­
dow o f their vehicle.
The city is installing50 o f the park­
ing gadgets over the next couple o f
months, with 6,000 o f the old-fashioned
parking meters scheduled to be replaced
over the next four years w ith 900
SmartM eters.
To operate the new device after park­
ing the vehicle, walk to the nearest
SmartMeter (usually located near the cen­
ter o f the block on the same side of the
street) and insert payment. When the time
that is needed appears on the display,

press the green button. The machine will
print out a receipt showing the amount
paid, the date and the expiration time. The
larger portion o f the receipt must be stuck
on the inside o f the vehicle’s curbside
window. The smaller portion can serve as
a reminder o f the expiration time.
When using a crcdit/debit card or
SmartCard, the minimum purchase is $ 1.

space is desired, press the “ M axim um
Tim e" button or press the blue “ 15
m inute” button for parking tim e in in­
crements o f 15 minutes. Press the green
button to complete the transaction. You
must purchase the full am ount o f tim e
you desire before pressing the green
button. You cannot purchase tw o tic k ­
ets a, the same time as they will have the
sam eexpira,ion time.
If there is time left on the receipt, it
may be taken to use w hile parking in a
different metered space elsewhere. The
expiration time still rem ains the same.
