Man Charged in Robbery
Leading to Officer’s Death
(AP) — The suspect in an at
tempted robbery that played a part
in the death of a Portland police
officer has turned himself in.
Sydney Houston, 40, told po
lice he walked into the Broadmoor
Golf Course May 26 carrying what
he claimed was a bomb in a white-
and-blue lunch cooler. The cooler,
though, was full of bricks, and
Houston ran off without any cash,
police and golf club staff said.
Roughly two hours later, Port
land Officer Kirk Huffstetler, 32,
was heading west on Northeast
Marine Drive with his emergency
lights and siren on to cover an
other officer who had stopped a
potential suspect in the robbery
attempt.
Officer Kirk H uffstetler died in
a crash on Marine Drive while
backing up another officer
responding to a robbery
attempt.
Huffstetler veered off the road,
skidded for about 100 yards and
slammed into a concrete wall. He
died from chest injuries.
Police said speed probably was
a factor, but they were investigat
ing whether another motorist had
pulled out in front of the officer. A
funeral procession and memorial
service was held Thursday.
Huffstetler, who had married
four months ago and was expect
ing his first child in December,
joined the Portland Police Bureau
in November after he had worked
for Portland School Police since
1995.
Huffstetler is the 26th Portland
officer to die on duty since 1867
and the eighth to die in a car crash.
