De La Salle
Plans College-
Prep School
De La Salle N orth C atholic H igh School will
establish a new college-preparatory school to meet
the needs o f underserved students thanks to a grant
o f$ 300,000 from the M aybelle C lark M acdonald
Fund.
The grant will provide im provem ents and equip
m ent to renovate the form erly vacant Q ueen o f
Peace Elem entary School in north Portland, which
is located in one o f the city ’ s m ost culturally and
economically diverse communities.
Entitled "The Schoo, That W orks” because all of
the students at the school are em ployed, De La
Salle replicates the highly successful Jesuit C risto
Rey High School w ork-study m odel in C hicago.
The model achieves high expectations, small classes,
moral development, tight discipline, personal atten
tion and parent involvement.
Students gain life skills in real w ork jo b settings
that directly offset educational costs.
De La Salle began in S eptem ber w ith the first
class o f 72 freshm en and w om en.

my responsibility to give God
