Supreme Court struck down a congres
sional ban on virtual child pomogra
phy, ruling that the First Amendment
only protects pornography or other
sexual images that only appear to de
pict real children engaged in sex.

Astronauts Test Space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astro­
nauts got mixed results during the first
test o f the international space station’s
new railcar. The flatcar traveled 17 3/4
feet to its designated work station. The
car was latching into place when
software message indicated a failure,
just 10 minutes into the test.
Bin Laden Shown on Tape

CAIRO, Egypt— Osama bin Laden, his
top deputy and a man identified as a
Sept. 11 attacker were shown in brief
video excerpts aired M onday by the
pan-Arab satellite station Al-Jazeera.
An Al-Jazeera official told The Associ­
ated Press the tapes were received a
few days ago.

proved their parenting skills, they still
have trouble paying rent, and they
spend less time with their kids, accord­
ing to a three-state study that examined
details o f family life.

WASH INGTON — The Internal Rev­
enue Service mistakenly paid out more
than $30 million to tax filers seeking
nonexistent slavery tax credits in 2000
and2001 . Last year, the IRS discovered
that some erroneous refunds were be­
ing issued but was only partly effective
in stopping them.

the Northern Cal ifomia coast have been
dying for more than two years, and
scientists are having a hard time get­
ting ahead o f the problem. Some tree
experts even fear the disease could
even spread to the forests o f the inte­
rior United States.

selected from the Rose Festival Court.
Ambassadors Begin Tour
Court in place for 2002 Rose Festival
This year's Queen o f Rosaria will be
chosen at a coronation event on Thurs­
day, May 30, at 8 p.m. at the Arlene
SchnitzerConcert Hall.
Peers who represent their respective
high schools introduce members o f the
2002 Rose Festival Court.
Each court member presents a brief
speech and is featured in a video. Wesley
Grout, last year’s Rose Festival Queen
Leela Joshi
Wilson High School
and graduate o f Lincoln High School
will be presenting the crown.
