“Black Gold” is the first book to
authenticate the lost sessions,
previously unknown recorded col
laborations, and rare film and video
documents o f one o f the most
innovative and influential rock
guitarists in music history. From a
wealth o f unreleased and com
mercially unavailable studio, live,
and home recordings, the author
c h ro n ic le s ev ery sta g e o f
Hendrix’s career, from his early
tours and recordings with Little
Richard, the Isley Brothers, and
Curtis Knight to jam sessions with
Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, and
Stephen Stills. By examining how
Hendrix’s fame was created and
exploited, Roby counters many
misperceptions to finally set the
record straight.
The author provides the first
full analysis o f “First Rays o f the
New Rising Sun,” Hendrix’s un
finished album; discusses “Black
Gold,” an unreleased autobio
graphical musical suite that has
been in storage for thirty years;
and speculates in his unfinished
compositions, such as “Scorpio
Woman,” a twenty-four-minute
piece recorded only weeks before
his death and never released.
Roby has uncovered the stories
behind little-known and forgot
ten works, including Hendrix’s
participation in the recording o f
Don Covay and the Goodtimers’
“Mercy, Mercy,” a Top 40 hit in
1964, and his proposed collabora
tion with Quincy Jones.
The author explores Hendrix’s
journeys into jazz with Miles
Davis, John M cLaughlin, and
Rahsaan Roland Kirk; his excur
sions into blues with B.B. King,
Johnny Winter, and Buddy Guy;
and his backing o f early rap pio
neers like the Last Poets.
