PCC Should Help Restore
Albina Christian Ministry
PCC Expansion Brings
Opportunity to Community

Neighborhood A ssociation and has held
three com m unity-w ide forums. The input
has been very valuable. I believe the cam
pus now has an improved product that meets
both the needs o f the campus and the resi
dential neighborhoods.
The expansion project calls for up to four
new facilities and a building addition in this
Phase One plan.
Proposed is a new physical education build
ing, located on Killingsworth and Kirby, next to
Jefferson High; a humanities center on the
comer of Albina and Killingsworth; an ad
vanced technology center at the southeast
edge of the campus; a science addition to
Jackson Hall; and to the west a humanities
b u ild in g on the corner o f A lbina and
Killingsworth and a public services training
building on Albina and Jessup. The commer
cial strip on Killlingsworth between Borthwick
and Mississippi will remain intact.
The college is currently in the process of
purchasing approximately 24 properties that
represent four different blocks of property
near the campus. The relocation is going
smoothly - approximately 60 percent com
plete, all through voluntary sales of property.
The college hopes to have the process com
pleted by early June.
Frankly, change can be difficult and chal
lenging, for the neighborhood and for the
college. However, it is gratifying to learn that
a number of the residents and several busi
nesses that have worked with our relocation
experts are very satisfied with their new homes
or properties.
The college expects to hear from the city
in mid-April w hether the expansion plan
meets city and neighborhood needs. Park
ing is always difficult in an urban area.
However, the plan does a good job of reduc
ing the problem. The college is proposing
257 new off-street spaces, which would
bring the total to 681 spaces.
The mission of the campus is to provide
lifelong learning and workforce training to
citizens of the Portland metro area. The cam
pus has strong ties and, in fact, is imbedded into
the community itself. Cascade is diverse ra
cially, culturally and by income and social
status. The campus is student-focused.
We believe the education students receive
from PCC makes the community part of the
portfolio the student takes with them. Cascade
is, and in the future will be, a part of the
revitalization of the surrounding community.
We are proud to be part of the renaissance of
north and northeast Portland and are commit
ted to enduring community partnerships.

law add another 20 percent, bringing it to
$610,000 and would offer another $100,000
for moving, renovation, restoration, modifica
tions, legal costs, etc.
If we refused, we could get our own
appraisal. When it came in beyond their low
price, they would not add the 20 percent,
which would not give us ample funds for
simple restoration to ministry and whole
ness.
We unhappily signed and are now faced
with the horrendous task of moving, renovat
ing and modifying the new property to restora
tion for our ministry.
Is it too much to ask that we get proper
assistance for simple restoration of our minis
try within the community where we belong?
