Church is offering children a new
perspective on world religions, and
their attitude toward peace, through
its first annual Peace Camp.
T he G race Institute A rts for
Peace Spring C am p, for children
age 6 though 12, will run from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m ., M arch 25 through 29
at the church, 1535 N.E. 17th Ave.
Child care will be available before
and after at G ran d m a’s Place,
across the street from the church.
The cam p will include three field
trips to a C hristian church, a Jew ­
ish synagogue, and a M uslim
m osque. A m orning snack will be
provided, and children are asked
to bring a sack lunch from hom e.

“A fterthe tragedy, many people
turned to their faith for com fort,”
the in stitu te’s Sandra Bright says.
O rganizers thought that teaching
children about other faiths w ould
“ p ro m o te u n d e rs ta n d in g an d
peace,” she says.
The cam p will include an exten­
sive arts curriculum , as students
express w hat they have learned
and experienced in fibre, visual art
and dance.
“A rt is a universal language,”
Bright says.

The Peace-ing ItT o g eth erco n ­
ference is sponsored by the A rch­
diocese o f P ortland’s O ffice of
Ju stice and P eace and by the
U niversity o f Portland. T he topic
o f this year’s presentation is “Spiri­
tuality and Science: Linking W a­
tersheds and O ceans.” Dr. Jane
L ubchenco will be the keynote
speaker.
Dr. Jane L ubchenco is an en v i­
ronm ental scientist and a m arine
ec o lo g ist activ ely en g ag ed in
teaching, research, and synthe­
sizing and com m unicating scien­
tific know ledge to the public and
policy m akers. Dr. L ubchenco is
the W ayne and G ladys Valley Pro­
fesso r o f M arine B iology and d is­
tinguished P rofessor o f Z oology
at O regon State U niversity. She
received a B achelor o f A rts d e­
gree from C olorado C ollege in
1969, a M aster o f Science degree
from the U niversity o f W ashing­
ton in 1971, and her Ph.D . from
H arvard U niversity in 1975. She
w as A ssistant P rofessor o f B iol­
ogy at H arvard before m oving to
O SU in 1978.
Dr. L ubchenco has long sought
to encourage m utual enrichm ent
o f scien ce an d relig io n . She
helped to engender support for
the Joint A ppeal o f Religion and
Science on the E nvironm ent, has
participated in the w ork o f the
National Religious Partnership for
the E nvironm ent, and has pro­
vided strong encouragem ent for
public reflection on “T he C olum -
bia R iver W atershed: C aring for
Creation and the C om m on G ood,”
the new international pastoral let­
ter by the C atholic bishops o f the
region. H er talk w ill m ake direct
references to the pastoral letter
and its significance in linking spiri­
tuality and science as w ell as w a­
tersheds and oceans.
Dr. L u b ch en co ’s current re ­
search interests include m arine
conservation biology, biological
d iv e rsity , eco sy ste m serv ices,
e c o lo g ic a l cau se s an d c o n s e ­
quences o f global changes, and
sustainable ecological system s.

A cremation service was held fo r Annett Zena Stanton, who died on Feb. 3, 2002 at age o f 60.
Ms. Stanton was born on Oct. 18,1942 in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Portland in 1990. She served
as the Vice President o f North Portland Bible College and was a member o f the Church o f Christ.
Survivors include her daughters, Denise Frazier, Fidela Cotton and Veronica Stanton; Son, Michael
Stanton; Sister, Susett Anderson.
