T hrough my m inistry, I like to speak out for the
m arginalized and invisible. M y involvem ent is in behalf of
the poor, gays and lesbians, w om en, those w ith AIDS,
blacks, and prisoners, along with criticism and bom bers o f
abortion clinics and opposition to the death penalty.
T hrough God, I was directed to offer my gifts and
services to the Episcopal church. In 1 9 8 0 ,1 w as ordained.
A fter w orking as a recto r o f a church and chaplain o f a
prison system in Philadelphia, I later becam e executive
d irecto r o f an Episcopal publishing com pany.
For tw enty centuries, there has been an unbroken line o f
religious authority, from Christ him self through the apostles.
All o f them have been men. O n Feb. 2, 1 9 8 9 ,1 broke that
tradition by being the first A m erican o r the first person o f
A frican descent to break through that barrier, but also the
first w om an bishop in history.

M arines. He later w orked in the
construction industry.

Johnson, who died Jan. 30,2002 at
age 70.
Mr. Johnson w as bom M arch
14,1931, in H ogansville, G a., and
m oved to Portland in 1943. He
g rad u ated from L incoln H igh
School in 1950 and served in the
U.S. Army during the Korean War.
H e w as a truck driv er for C o n
so lid a te d F re ig h tw ay s fo r 20
years, retiring in 1994. In 1963, he
married Thelma Graham.
S urvivors include his w ife;
sons, V incent, R ichard, T hiel,
K elv in , B ashone an d D u stin ;
daughters, Adrian Johnson, M arla
H artley, R olanda Johnson and
D anielle Johnson; 19 grandchil
dren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

18 in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church for
A lbert Reed, w ho died Jan. 11,
2002 at age 87.
Mr. R eed was b om on M ay 27,
1914, in Fayette, M iss.
D uring W orld W ar II, he served
in the U.S. Army. He m oved to
Portland in 1944 and was a ch ef for
Union Pacific Railroad for 32 years,
retiring in 1977. He was a m em berof
the church for more than 50 years
and a deacon. In 1944, he m arried
Ruth Young; she died in 2000.
Survivors include his d augh
ters, L ynn G ibson and V elita
H am m on; eight grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. H is son,
Stanley, died in 1985.
