Dr. King dream ed o f the day

A m erica’s collective reach. A l
though it may look and feel differ
ently today than it did 200 years
ago, racial prejudice continues to
erode the social fabric o f this coun
try. Racially biased messages bom
barding us daily are so potent that
black and white people are hesitant
to even look at each other’s faces
when passing on the street.

ago,
B aha’u ’llah, founder o f the B aha'i
faith, taught the essential on e
ness o f hum ankind. A m erican
B ah a’ is regard racial prejudice as
the m ost vital and challenging is
sue to be addressed in the United
States today.
Jonathan Graves, facilitator o f a
workshop on racism, notes that it
takes trem endous effort and cour
age for white people to face their
deeply ingrained sense o f superi
ority. “W hen a person em braces
the B aha’i Faith, he or she makes a
conscious spiritual com m itm ent to
the unity o f mankind and equality
o f all people. Imagine how difficult
and painful it is to then stop out o f
the com fort zone, recognize on e’s
ow n inherent racist attitudes and
begin to work on them.”
G raves further notes, “If you
are not actively participating in
the eradication o f racism , then you
are supporting it through your
inaction.”
But as w hites have a responsi
bility to w ork on the elim ination of
racial prejudice, B aha’is o f color
also shoulder a significant role in
w orking tow ard this goal. Afri-

can-A m erican B aha’is are taught
to search their hearts for the c a
pacity to forgive past injustices
and to w ipe out every trace o f
suspicion that m ay still linger. To
respond in w arm th and love to
those long regarded as op p res
sors requires unending courage
and faith.
“T he only w ay to overcom e
racial barriers is through spiritual
developm ent,” says Dr. Joy Leary,
m em ber o f the Local Spiritual
A ssem bly o f the B aha’is o f P ort
land, “the m ore w e develop spiri
tually, the less significant issues
o f skin color w ill becom e. T he
essential oneness o f hum anity is
so m uch bigger than our perceived
differences.”
B ahai’s are taught that w hen
you gaze upon the face o f another
person, you see the face o f your
Lord. T hat person should be ap
proached w ith the same love, d ig
nity and value you w ould give
your Lord.
The B ah a’i w ritings teach that
nothing short o f extrem e patience,
true hum ility, and deliberate, p er
sistent prayerful effort w ill bring
about the ju stice o f equality. T he
road to equality is beset w ith pit-
falls and none o f us is perfect. Yet,
is it the intention o f every B ah a’i
to face and overcom e this ch a l
lenging issue. B ah ai’s o f all races
w ill continue to w orship, work,
stu d y an d so c ia liz e to g e th er.
T hey w ill continue to celebrate
cultural diversity w hile nurturing
unity through genuine love, d ig
nity and respect. B aha’ is will hold
each o th e r’s children, look into
their faces and see God. From
there, ju stice w ill prevail.
