$8 M illion Lottery Prize Claim Rejected
(AP) - The Oregon State
Lottery has refused to pay an
$8.35 million jackpot toaPort-
land man who says he holds
the winning ticket.
State police investigators
say the ticket held by Chris
Reamer was purchased more
than three hours after the
drawing. The Marion County
district attorney’s office is
considering whether to pros
ecute the case as attempted
fraud.
But Reamer insists he is
the rightful winner of the
$8.34 million, and has filed a
breach of contract suit against
the Oregon Lottery Commis
sion.
Reamer says he bought the
ticket on June 17 at a 7-Eleven
Store. When the next day’s
$8.35 million Megabucks draw
ing was held, the six numbers
Reamer picked came up, his
complaint says.
Reamer’s wife, Tanya, and
father-in-law Gilbert Brown
brought the ticket to lottery head
quarters in Salem the next day.
But lottery officials say
that’s not the way it happened.
They charge that after the
winning numbers for June 18
were drawn. Reamer entered
those numbers onto a play slip,
purchased a Megabucks ticket.
Feds May Question
Portland Foreigners
(AP) - Federal agents will likely
question 23 foreign visitors to the
Portland area because Portland
police w on’t, saying they can't do
the interviews because o f state
privacy laws.
Portland was the first city in the
nation to refuse the request to help
interview five-thousand foreign
visitors across the country as part
of the federal terrorism probe.
Last week, Corvallis also an
nounced it also w on’t be helping
with the interviews as requested
by the US Justice Department.
Corvallis Police C hief Pam
Roskowski says the department’s
resources are best used in track
ing down criminals, not in ques
tioning people who aren’t in
volved in crimes.
Roskowski says her depart
ment will continue to work with
federal investigators, but it will
only help when leads indicate
criminal activity.
Even though the state attor
ney general says there is nothing
in Oregon law that prevents state
investigators from helping with
the interviews, Portland officials
have a different interpretation.
They say they believe several
o f the questions overstep the line
allowed by state law.
Federal authorities want about
200 people in Oregon, here on
student, work or tourist visas,
questioned. All have come to the
state in the past two years from
countries known to harbor terror
ists.
went to lottery headquarters
saying he’d bought the ticket
on June 17 and he was there to
claim the $8.35 m illion
Megabucks prize.
Investigators discovered the
ticket had been purchased not
on June 17 but at 11:10 p.m.
the following day - more than
three hours after the drawing,
said lottery spokesman David
Hooper.
Hooper said the ticket pur
chased by Reamer was actu
ally for June 20, and it was
identified as such. The ticket
also stated the M egabucks
jackpot for June 18.
Reamer’s attorney, Karen
Thompson, insists that her
client purchased the ticket on
the day he claims.
Thompson said she has
spoken with about 10 ac
quaintances of Reamer who
say they saw him wildly cel
ebrating his win after check
ing his ticket hours before
lottery officials say he bought
it
She contends that the lot
tery computer system may
have made a mistake by spit
ting out a June 20ticket, rather
than one for June 18,
“Surely there could be
something wrong with the
machine,” she said.
Portland Police Bureau Detec
tives have arrested a man for a Nov.
14 murder in southeast Portland.
Danny Philip Flack, 33, faces a
charge o f aggravated murder in
the death o f 65-year-old Kenneth
Patterson, who was found in the
detached garage of a home in the
5200 block o f Southeast 57"’ Av
enue.
Flack was also charged with
two counts o f burglary and unau
thorized use of a motor vehicle.
Homicide detectives believe
Flack killed the victim during a
robbery, then stole his vehicle,
returning later to commit a bur
glary.
Police believe additional evi
dence of the murder may have
D anny Phillip Flack
been placed in a bag or backpack
and then thrown into a nearby
field or yard.
The investigation is continu
ing.

and Hispanic families experience and manage ADHD, what health needs they may have, and
what opportunities they have for receiving these services. The study will involve two
meetings, about 2 hours each, at your home or place convenient for you.
Which families are eligible?
• Families with at least one child (age 6-19) with a diagnosis of ADHD.
• Families with al least two people (the ADHD child and one parent). Hopefully both parents
and siblings will participate as well.
• Families that arc willing to participate in one interview and complete a series of
questionnaires.
• Families that speak English or are willing to work through an interpreter.
The children of victims of
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
will be eligible to receive a full
scholarship for a college edu
cation at one of the United
Negro College Fund’s 39 mem
ber colleges and universities.
Scholarships will be offered
to any child, regardless o f age,
who lost a parent or guardian,
as a result of these tragic
events.
The scholarships will be
awarded based on financial
need and will cover the cost of
tuition, fees, room and board,
books and supplies.
UNCF hopes other colleges
and universities around the
country join UNCF in making
the guaranty of a college edu
cation possible for each and
every victim of the Sept. 11
tragedy because, “A mind is a
terrible thing to waste.”
